Infrastructure Set for Seismic Strengthening
|

Wellington is set to get safer when strengthening works begin on the Karori Tunnel next year. The 111-year-old tunnel, located near Wellington’s main fault line, is used by 17,000 cars a day on average so Wellington City Council has deemed its upgrade essential. The works are expected to take nine months with the tunnel to be closed six hours a night. A contractor is expected to be chosen in December so works can be in full swing by February 2012.

Over a two week period energetic students and staff of Sutton Park combined with an enthustatic team from Pacific Steel to clear, prepare and plant a garden that would educate students on the benefits of garderning and healthy eating. As Pacific Steel is New Zealand's largest recycler, converting 90,000 car bodies each year into reinforcing steel, it is strongly focussed on improving the environment and educating young children on the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle.

Reddy Crowned Champion of Innovation

Vishwa Reddy, Fletcher Pacific Steel’s Fiji Rolling Mill Manager was awarded the Champion of Innovation at the inaugural Fletcher Building Innovation Awards, held on 3rd of November at Eden Park, Auckland. The award was jointly shared with Travis Griffin from Stramit Building Products. Reddy’s entry showcased an eclectic mix of innovations, cost saving and health & safety initiatives over the course of his employment with the Pacific Steel Rolling Mill based in Fiji.

China troubled by steel-thinning scam in building foundations

A news article from The Australian has highlighted the dangerous building practices currently taking place in China. The exposure in the back streets of Zhengzhou of a "stretching" factory, employed in the nefarious trade of steel-thinning, has raised questions about the safety of China's buildings.

Pacific Steel is proud to announce that it has created a map showing exactly where Wiremark wire can be purchased. The map was created in conjunction with a campaign educating farmers and fencing contractors about the difference between Wiremark wire and imported product.

New Zealand's Best Fencer Found
|
|
Pacific Steel, through it's fencing brand Wiremark was a proud sponsor and supporter of the National Fencing Championships. Fencing has been part of Fieldays since the inception of the event, and is an essential part of not only the event but of New Zealand farming. The gruelling competition is extremely demanding as it can take up to six hours to complete while still maintaining a high quality fence.

New Packing Yard Complete
|
|
Pacific Steel’s onsite packing yard is now complete. The 3000m2 area which will be used to pack bar and coil for export customers was used for the first time on Monday 30th May. Previously product was stored in the Wire Coil Storage Area, which was off site and not designed to carry heavy loads, and subsequently caused the concrete to crack. General Manager, Ian Jones says that, “the packing yard is an integral component to our radical service delivery and our Australian customers will see an immediate benefit to their operations through quicker lead times ”.

St Laurence House Refurbishment
|
|
The St Laurence House project shows that a job does not need to be large to be complex.
The project included the addition of an extra floor to this premium commercial property on Auckland’s waterfront, and the refurbishment of five other floors in the building.
