Pacific Steel assists Sutton Park School in suplying staff and money to ensure that students have an awareness of healthy eating and gardening.  Located 3.5km from Pacific Steel, Sutton Park School has a great relationship with the steel plant. Youthline

Papatoetoe¹s old fire station will once again help to save lives but this time as the new home for Youthline. Its doors have been nailed shut since the Fire Service moved out in 2003, but they were reopened recently and renovations are due to start straight away.  John Beveridge, General Manager of Pacific Steel has been spearheading Fletcher Building¹s contribution to the refurbishment, which includes financial and product support from seven business units.
³This was a great opportunity to put something back into our local community" says John. "South Auckland doesn¹t have a centre like this and it is an ideal fit for the businesses involved to do something in a community where a large proportion of our workforce live".
Youthline plays a significant role in the community, receiving more than 300,000 calls or texts from troubled youth each year."

"This is something positive big business can do to help with youth issues." "This building is 50 years old and is cold and draughty it is brilliantly located, but it now needs to be warm and energy efficient, it needs to be quiet (for counselling) and it needs to have a heart. It needs high quality building solutions for its transformation from fire station to youth hub", says John.

Kiwi Can

Experiencing a Kiwi Can lesson is like being at Rainbow’s End Theme Park for 40 minutes:it’s exhilarating, memorable and FUN! 6000 South Auckland children aged 5-12 years are taught life skills by their two dynamic Kiwi Can Leaders in a really positive, encouraging environment. These children are empowered to make really good life choices. Through Kiwi Can 6000 students are being taught the topics of respect, manners, trust and friendships through a 40 minute interactive session with their class once a week, every week of the school year.  Kiwi Can has had a positive impact on the lives of the students and their families for 13 years now and the Kiwi Can Trust is working hard to grow the presence of the Kiwi Can programme throughout all South Auckland schools.  Pacific Steel acknowledges the amazing influence the programme has brought to children and families of the South Auckland community and support Kiwi Can in their goal to make a difference.

Teacher at Rowandale School:

‘Kiwi Can has motivated and inspired the kids to do what they’ve been taught: following instructions the first time, not the second time! Some of the kids will say, ‘Remember, that’s not what we do in Kiwi Can- I don’t need to remind them!’
