Since our founding in 1962, Pacific Steel Group has played an important role in the environment by taking waste material and converting it into a valuable product. Today we are New Zealand's largest recycling operation, and the Otahuhu mill is the country’s primary producer and supplier of wire rod, reinforcing bar products, all made from recovered scrap steel.

Our products are designed for the natural built environment, to meet the needs of New Zealand businesses, and using resources sourced from New Zealand. Sustainable growth of the natural built environment requires reinforcing bar and wire products made to the highest standard.

To achieve this, we use processes that are acknowledged as world-best practices, which ensure we manufacture and supply our products without adverse environmental affects. The success of this formula in the development of high specification reinforcing materials has resulted in Pacific Steel Group products being in demand across the Tasman.

We are proud of the many projects where our products help ensure environmental sustainability, including these examples:

• The reinforced concrete dams of the Hunua Ranges that supply much of Auckland’s water needs were constructed of reinforcing steel made by Pacific Steel.
• The tunnel that Vector built to bring 110kV electrical cables to power the Auckland central business district was constructed of reinforcing steel made by Pacific Steel.
• The bridges that span our waterways to maintain our sensitive freshwater and marine environments were also built with reinforcing steel made by Pacific Steel.

Everywhere you look you will find a Pacific Steel product in use to support and sustain the built and natural environment. Pacific Steel Group has always been environmentally aware, not only now that the green movement is in full swing.  In 1998, we constructed a new, $10 million bag house in our steel plant, in compliance with a renewed air discharge consent.

The philosophy of environmental sustainability is true in Pacific Steel Group's own backyard. It is reflected in our values and in the continuous improvements at the Otahuhu mills. To ensure we remain true to our environmental commitments, Pacific Steel Group has a dedicated environment office with a full-time professional engineer to manage the environment portfolio.
